This is supported by the fact that some patients suffer IBS following gut infections and food poisoning, signifying that these conditions have somehow changed the gut making it more sensitive.

Watch what you eat.
The gut typically reacts to food by contracting, and the strength of the reaction seems to be strongly associated to the quantity of fat in the food. Avoid fat in your diet. Fat-rich foods such as dairy products can be seriously troublesome for an IBS person. Drink skimmed or semi-skimmed to help prevent an IBS attack. Use only a minimal amount of fat for cooking. Bake or steam foods so not to upset the stomach.
Eat meals in small portions.
Fibre is good to help ease IBS symptoms. Nonetheless people differ and can respond differently. Fibre can help sort out constipation, but can have an opposite affect causing softer stools.
