Abortion

Abortion is not the nicest of words that we like to hear. However in many cases of an abortion being mentioned there will be reasons for why it may have been suggested by your doctor or yourself at some time. To make a decision to have a pregnancy terminated is a big one to make, so therefore a considerable amount of thought should go into the matter before any abortion takes place. Once again depending on circumstances where the mother maybe in danger if the pregnancy is allowed to continue – or that the infant may have major health concerns, then it is imminent for an abortion to take place.

If you have made up your mind to end your pregnancy and have an abortion then contact your GP sooner than later.

In the United Kingdom it is legal for an abortion up to 24 weeks, but some hospitals will not consider termination beyond 18 to 20 weeks. An abortion would have to be agreed upon by two doctors. Abortions will normally only take place and carried out for genuine reasons. These reasons can be connected to mental or physical health issues which may cause serious problems in the pregnancy if permitted to continue.

Remember to check out every little piece of information on what abortions are all about, the risks etc. Your doctor is the best person to seek advice from and not unfamiliar sources.

There are different methods used for terminating a pregnancy, ask you doctor about these if you are unsure about some things that you may find confusing.

The two common abortion methods used are.

The abortion pill method is for pregnancies up to nine weeks old and involves taking two drugs – called mifepristone and prostaglandin – two days apart. These cause the womb to contract and shed its lining so that the embryo is lost through the vagina. This can be painful and some women feel sick or have vomiting and diarrhoea with these drugs.

A surgical termination another abortion method can be performed up to thirteen weeks. This may be performed under local or a general anaesthetic. Many things in association with having an abortion may sound alarming or confusing at times, if this be the case, in your case, do not hesitate to make a point to who ever is giving the medical consultation that you are not fully understanding, and could they if possible make it a more simple explanation. A surgical termination is where a sterile tube is located into the uterus through the cervix. Suction is applied through the tube and the pregnancy terminated. Many women are discharged from hospital on the same day pending no complications

Technique differs from 14 to 19 onwards, now referred to as a surgical dilation and evacuation where the neck of the womb is stretched open to allow forceps to remove the foetus. Like any type surgery problems can rise, less complications if the pregnancy is ended within ten weeks. After an abortion has been carried out it is normal to bleed for a short while after. However, how much blood loss will determine normal or not. Any pain after treatment should be checked out by your doctor.

If an unpleasant or abnormal show of vaginal discharge, a rise in temperature along with abdominal pain occurs after having an abortion could be due to an inflammation which may have developed if the uterus has not been emptied fully, or if bacteria have got into the uterus during the termination. Antibiotics are normally prescribed to clear the problem.

This can be a very delicate time for any woman who has had an abortion or about to have one - and one of a situation that needs compassionate understanding. If you feel alone, fret not because there are people and organizations that can help you through the stages of abortion.
